Não Te Prives (NTP) -10 years defending sexual rights in Coimbra

Não Te Prives - Do Not Deprive YourselfOn February 14th, Valentine's Day, the association
Não Te Prives (NTP) - "Do Not Deprive Yourself" - Group for the Defense of Sexual Rights celebrated 10 years of existence in Coimbra. NTP is a voluntary association of people working in the area of human rights, with two main axes. On the one hand, it invests in strengthening women's rights and affirming of new masculinities, deconstructing gender stereotypes and promoting equal opportunities for women and men. On the other hand, it works on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, combating all forms of discrimination: legal, political, cultural or social, based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

In February 2012, in order to celebrate a decade of work, NTP organized 10 days of activities, starting with the exhibition "10 Years Changing Coimbra", organizing the "Out of the Closet" party with an Anti Homophobia and Transphobia Platform, and also by organizing debates and sessions in schools about gender and feminism, street actions, readings of homo / erotic poetry and prose, sessions for children where to read inclusive fairy tales, culminating in a dinner with raffle of a Basket of Sexual Rights. The diversity of initiatives and public that is covered by these themes showed the importance of working on gender and sexuality in a serious and educational way, without giving up on (hetero) sexism.

Today Coimbra is a very different city that it was 10 years ago, and it is with great pride and renewed sense of responsibility that NTP is committed to make this city more inclusive for all people. Over the last decade, NTP has developed a set of activities in the city; among these there is the partnership with the Campaign "Making Waves", who brought to Portugal in 2004 the boat "Women on Waves" and co-organized the Marches Against Homophobia and Transphobia in Coimbra since 2010. In 10 years, NTP joined hundreds of people approaching academic discussions to social movements and to civil society. In 10 years, NTP organized book launches, film cycles, held campaigns and sessions in secondary schools and higher education institutions. In 10 years, NTP produced informative materials on equality, justice and citizenship. In 10 years, NTP has been on the streets in protest, in celebration or distributing prevention material for sexual transmitted infections.

NTP’s starting point was in 2002 and it is still far from being the point of arrival. On the contrary, it wants to continue its ride together with whoever feels angry against discrimination, especially because a fairer society is the one in which all people walk side by side in dignity, rights and expectations.
